We often get asked whether it’s possible to tell by looking or smelling if building materials contain asbestos. That would be really helpful, since asbestos was used in thousands of products and for many decades.
Unfortunately, no, asbestos-containing products cannot be identified by look or smell. They look and smell the same as the tile, roofing materials, popcorn ceiling texture, etc. that is safe. Individual asbestos fibers are so small that they aren’t visible by the human eye. They are a rock fiber, so they don’t have an odor. Asbestos was used as a binder for many building products. It was mixed into the slurry in the manufacturing process of floor tiles and similar products, and handfuls of loose asbestos powder was thrown into drywall mud on the jobsite, as the mud was being mixed up to blend seams and be sprayed or troweled on for texture.
