Asbestos testing and inspection
Asbestos is a component of many building materials and is known to be a hazardous carcinogen. Contractors MUST perform testing and an asbestos survey prior to disturbing or demolishing any building materials that may contain asbestos.
Verity Restoration helps property owners and managers to test suspect materials for asbestos prior to renovation, construction, or demolition activities. If your property has sustained damage as a result of a fire or water damage, it is necessary to test for asbestos before work can begin.

Is asbestos testing required?
In almost all cases, yes. DEQ has very specific rules about asbestos emissions, and if anyone’s employees are involved the OSHA laws also apply. The Portland and Salem area dumps will not accept materials that may be asbestos-containing material (ACM) without the appropriate survey paperwork from testing. What Materials Might Contain Asbestos?
Although most people are aware of the potential for asbestos content in popcorn ceiling, vinyl tiles, and pipe insulation; any building material that is not made of wood, metal, or glass may contain asbestos. While most common in homes and buildings built between 1940-1975, asbestos is still found in building materials at Home Depot today.

What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a heat resistant serpentine silicate mineral that can be woven, or sprayed, and used as a binder or an insulator. there are six major minerals that are considered any asbestos family, including Chrysotile, Amosite, and Crocidolite. Chrysotile is the one most commonly found in residential construction in the Portland and Salem Oregon areas. These minerals all are composed of long and thin fibrous crystals, each of which can be made airborne by abrasion and other processes. It maintains its fibrous shape even when broken into microscopic pieces. It is invisible to the human eye, easy to inhale and the lungs are not able to expel it back out. The fact that it gets stuck and acts as an irritant is why it is carcinogenic.
When do I need an asbestos inspection?
All houses and other residential buildings constructed before 2004 must have an asbestos survey conducted by an accredited inspector prior to any demolition or renovation activities unless the owner-occupant is doing a home renovation themselves. a copy of the asbestos survey must be on-site during all renovation or demolition activities and must be provided to DEQ upon request. In order for dumps in the local Portland area to accept many building materials including drywall and flooring, a survey is also required if the house is older than 2004.
