Most common causes of floods:
Heavy Rain – The most common cause of Portland flooding is heavy rain. For the most part, we have an infrastructure designed to move large amounts of rainwater into appropriate basins and reservoirs. When the Oregon rain outdoes itself, however, the infrastructure is overwhelmed, the drainage systems back up, and the water rises — sometimes into homes. This typically happens only in cases of sustained heavy rains over a long period.
River Overflow – While it’s unlikely that you’ll end up with river water in your basement, the Clackamas river.
Sewer overflow – Sewer water flooding into your basement may have been a recent occurrence for many Portlanders. And here’s a story from OPB about an estimated 60,000 gallons to overflow into the river near Portland’s Linnton neighborhood.
Here’s some info from City of Portland regarding sewer overflow advisory: https://www.portlandoregon.gov/bes/36989
Ice and snow melt – A winter of heavy snow and other precipitation can lead to a spring of basement flooding. Most years, we don’t have too much trouble in Portland, but about once a decade a huge snowfall melt leads to a lot of water in basements and other unwanted places.
What Are The Consequences of Basement Flooding?
Basement flooding comes with many unfortunate consequences. Untreated or improperly treated water damage can bring on long-term problems, such as:
- Health complications: Flood damage can cause mold and bacteria growth, leading to serious, even fatal health risks such as allergies and respiratory conditions. Those with chronic illnesses and autoimmune disorders are at even higher risk.
- Structural damage: The longer that building materials are wet, the more chance of long term damage.
With all that in mind, it’s imperative that you find the right water damage repair company to help you deal with your flood damage.
