There are three common reasons for attic mold. All are from excess water:
- Inadequate ventilation – if there aren’t enough soffit and roof vents, or if insulation is blocking the soffit vents, any condensation that gets into the attic gets trapped and creates a great atmosphere for mold growth.
- Roof leaks – if water is coming through the roof, those areas of wet sheathing are likely places for mold to grow.
- Bathroom fans that are venting into the attic instead of up and out of the roof add bonus moisture to the attic.
It is very important that the source of water is fixed. If the mold is removed/remediated but the water source isn’t fixed, the mold will come right back.
Damp, stuffy attic = bad. Dry, well-ventilated attic = great.
